DIY: Do…Or Die! Podcast

At citizensound we enjoy listening to all sorts of music, so we decided to share some of our current favourites with you for our special Venice Festival of Media podcast. You can find out more about our panel at the event here.

All these acts are either unsigned, or with small independent labels from across the world. The podcast includes artists form the UK, US, Canada, Australia, Brazil, France, Belgium, Spain, Germany, Sweden, of course the home nation of the event Italy…

1. Wintersleep - Weighty Ghost (Labwork Music) This five piece band are from Nova Scotia in Canada. Weighty Ghost is taken from their third album, Welcome To The Night Sky. www.myspace.com/wintersleep

2. Little Fish - Devil’s Eyes (Unsigned) Little Fish could be about to become big, very very big, with one of the world’s top record producers and label head, recently flying in to the UK just to check them out. Juju (female, guitars and vocals) and Nez (male and drums) make up this London-based two-piece combo. www.myspace.com/littlefishmusic

3. White Rabbits - Kid’s On My Shoulders (Fierce Panda) White Rabbits came to NYC via the arid plains of the Mid West.Their debut album, Fort Nightly, has just got a UK release from the very same indie label that released Coldplay’s debut single. www.myspace.com/whiterabbits4. The Teenagers - Starlett Johansson (Merok/XL) This potty-mouthed three piece from Paris, France are infused with the spirit of Serge Gainsbourg, and are been hailed the saviours of the French indie music scene. www.myspace.com/theteenagers

5. El Guincho - Palmitos Park (El Gunicho) El Gunicho is Pablo Díaz-Reixa who hails from Barcelona. His debut album has recieved rave reviews in both the US and the UK. I’m not sure which genre his world music mash-ups belong to, but it’s catching. www.myspace.com/elguincho

6. Otto - Lavanda (Trama)
Otto is from north east of Brazil. This track is from his third and best album, Sem Gravidade. His music is an elegant take on contemporary Brazilian music, but with a distinct, modern electronic touch. trama.uol.com.br/otto/

7. John & Jehn - 20 L O7 (Faculty Music Media) John and Jehn are a French duo who moved from their hometowns to London at the back-end of 2006. It is impossible to talk about them without mentioning that they are a couple, and very much in love. www.myspace.com/johnjehn

8. My Awesome Mixtape - Diderot (Amico Immaginario) The first of our acts from Italy, My Awesome Mixtape is 21-year old Paolo Torreggianiare from Bologna, Italy. This track is from his independently released debut album, My Lonely And Sad Waterloo. www.myspace.com/wearemyawesomemixtape

9. The Invisible Session - Till the End (Inverse Cinematics Remix) (Schema Records) Milan-based Luciano Cantone, Paolo Fedreghini and Marco Bianchi together are known as The Invisibile Session. This remix comes from Stuttgart producers Danilo Plessow and Joachim Tobias, otherwise known as Inverse Cinematics. www.ishtar.it/schema-i.htm

10. Jet Sounds - Nicola Conte (Schema Records) Nicola Conte is an Italian DJ and producer, best known for incorporating bossa nova themes, Italian film scores, easy listening, and ethnic Indian music into his exquisite music. www.myspace.com/nicolacontetheofficialspace

11. Tuma - Fred and the Dolphins (Amico Immaginario) Tuma are Matilde (voice, guitar), Squagghiatone (guitar), Simona (keyboards), Massi (bass), Alessio (drums), and Marco (flute). Other than they are from Italy, we know very little else about this fantastic band. www.myspace.com/giorgiotuma

12. Sia - Academia (Monkey Puzzle) Adelaide-born Sia has enjoyed success working with Grammy Award-nominated act, Zero 7. Sia’s new album, Some People Have REAL Problems is released on her own label in the UK, and on Starbuck’s Hear Music label in the US. www.myspace.com/siamusic

13. Soy Un Caballo - La Bibliotheque (Matamore) Belgian boy/girl duo Soy un Caballo (Spanish translation: “I’m a horse”) are Aurélie Muller and Thomas Van Cottom. Their debut album Les Heures de Raison features a duet with Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy. www.myspace.com/soyuncaballo

14. Son Of Dave - Old Times Were Good Times (Kartel) He grew up in a shed in Manitoba, Canada but now lives in London. “Tom Waits meets John Lee Hooker on a night out with Killa Kella” said The Guardian. Who are we to disagree! www.myspace.com/thesonofdave

15. thecocknbullkid - There’s A Mother In Our Bed (Unsigned)
Thecocknbullkid is Anita Blay. Thecocknbullkid is one word with no apostrophies, please. Thecocknbullkid is 22 years old and writes all her own songs and produces a number of them too. www.myspace.com/thecocknbullkid

16. Single - El amor en fuga (L’amour en fuite) (Elephant) Single is the solo project of Teresa Iturrioz, bass player and lyricist in seminal spanish indie pop band Le Mans. This is taken from her single Su Recuerdo. www.myspace.com/singleartist

17. The Templates - Daylight (Hole In The Sky) Silver (bandleader of the Templates), is an ex pro-surfer with a collection of old beat-up instruments salvaged from a shipwreck. This track is the first release on new Australian label, Hole In The Sky. www.myspace.com/holeintheskyinfo

18. Little Dragon - After The Rain (Peacefrog) This four-piece are from Gothenburg in Sweden, and are big pals of the man who provided the music for the amazing Sony Braiva ‘Balls’ advert, José González. www.myspace.com/yourlittledragon

19. Tawiah - Every Step (Bushgirl) We won’t apolgise for continually plugging Tawiah. She is a graduate of the BRIT school, alongside the likes of Amy Winehouse, The Kooks, Adele, Kate Nash and Leona Lewis. She is the true sound of British Soul music. www.myspace.com/tawiah
